I have two more stories that I’m in the middle of, and then I’m going to push my boundaries out there a little bit further, try to widen what I’m writing about.
I’m comfortable writing about relationships. I have a lot of practice with multiple marriages and loves along the way. I understand what it means to fall in love and what it means to fall out of it. It’s a familiar space, and it is one I have not exhausted by any means. There are so many stories like this to tell.
But a writer should be telling the stories that matter, and I’ve been thinking more lately about what stories I feel like need to be told. There is a hint of the environment and climate concerns in my work, and I feel like I need to draw that out more. I tend to write about queer themes being a queer woman myself. I write about dreamers because I like to dream.
There’s more out there, though, and I’m going to push to find it, to let my voice evolve. Sometimes it feels as though my writing is my soul singing to itself. I should share my voice with others, though, and the window for that is by singing what matters and what should matter. Where our attention should be.
That’s why we the writers, the painters, the thinkers, the dreamers, the poets, the dancers, and the denizens of the stage are all so dangerous. We hold the mirror up. I need to look closer to see what else is in the reflection.
